Carissa has been working to increase access to education through global and online learning for more than 20 years at Stanford University. As Associate Dean of Global and Online Education in Stanford's School of Engineering and Executive Director of Stanford Online, she is steering the integration of new technologies like AI and immersive learning into Stanford's credentialed non-degree programs to support personalized learning. Stanford Online, launched in 1996, was the first university internet delivery system and led to the first fully internet-streamed master's degree program and the establishment of Stanford's first non-degree credentials in 1999. Expanding upon that innovation for more than two decades, Carissa has scaled Stanford Online's capabilities to teach learners globally through stackable, non-degree credentials - and she has played a significant role in designing the Stanford University Credential Framework, a model that offers meaningful pathways to higher education, career advancement, and socio-economic mobility. Today, Stanford Online continues to issue the majority of alternative credentials at the university and has reached more than 23.4 million learners around the world since 2012.
